Communicating in a Multicultural Environment

2.1 Active Listening
Active listening is a communication technique that is used in counseling, training, and conflict resolution. It requires that the listener fully concentrate, understand, respond and then remember what is being said. An excellent tool to practice this soft skill is to incorporate the skill of echoing back to the conversation partner. Echoing simply means that we state back to the conversation partner what has been understood and heard. Misunderstandings between parties often arise and arguments can start or worsen because people miss this vital step. For example, when doctors interrupt patients’ oral description of pain during history taking – whether the pain described is of physical or emotional nature – and immediately start giving advice, offer solutions or prescribe treatment or medication, patients will instantly loose trust in the doctor-patient-relationship. Even the best physician can greatly improve the relationship with his patients if he practices this skill.

Echoing can also be used to calm an upset patient. Simply restating the emotional pain that the patient is going through at the moment will signal to the patient that he or she is being heard and that someone cares. In most cases, this will instantly calm the patient and the tending physician can continue with the important task of helping the patient medically.

Active listening is one of the most important tools that a doctor should use, because it helps him gain more information about the patient and his current condition.

It involves the listener observing the speaker's behavior and body language, which makes this specific skill not that easy to master.
