Communicating in a multilingual environment

Table of Content

3.1 The connection between culture and language
Kramsch (1998) has discussed the connection between culture and language at length. Both in verbal and nonverbal manifestation, communication expresses cultural reality. At the same time, language serves as the foundation of pediatric care (Kemp, 2005). Breakdown of communication can lead to improper diagnosis, inadequate pain management, underutilization of prescription medications, and difficulty in obtaining informed consent between parents and medical providers. Additional stress is often placed on families when language barriers lead to the inability to obtain accurate and complete information about a child’s health status or about recommended medical procedures. This accentuates the need for trained communication professionals, such as interpreters, in order to facilitate communication between care providers and care recipients.
